Richard Branson (the 212th richest person in the world according to Forbes $4 billion) was quoted saying that one of the keys to his success was finding and hiring “out of the box” thinkers and letting them do their jobs.
Where can I find out of the box thinkers you might ask. You might be surprised to learn that quite often they can be found in places where you least expect. They are often working in industries or positions not related to yours but have highly transferable skills that can benefit your business.
Take me for example. A chance meeting with the Vice President of Sales for a Dunn and Bradstreet company was the first person to influence a change of direction for me. He had a vision about expanding his product offering to increase revenues. He also had a vision of the type of skills he needed to accomplish this. Thinking out of the box, he asked me to change industries. Result – my skills easily transferred resulting in the launch of a new division netting significant profits to the bottom line.
